Murciélagos (1916) es quizás el libro de relatos más importante de Gustav Meyrink, el famoso autor de El Golem (1913). Su otro volumen, El cuerno encantado del pequeño burgués alemán (1913), recopila sólo una serie de relatos publicados de forma dispersa en revistas de la época. Murciélagos incluye varios de sus cuentos más destacados: Maese Leonhard, una nouvelle por su extensión, donde fusiona dos historias, una de incesto y de crimen —morosa y convincente—; y otra que lleva a Leonhard en busca de Jacobo de Vitríaco, el místico Gran Maestre de la Orden del Temple —mística y obsesiva—, una historia muy lograda que luego serviría de modelo a toda una generación de autores ingleses cultivadores del género. En el mismo nivel se ubican La visita que J. H. Oberheit hace a las tempijuelas, El cardenal Napellus y Los cuatro hermanos lunares, relato que contiene un curioso resumen, por así decirlo, de sus cuatro temas mayores. El juego de los grillos, De cómo el Dr. Job Paupersum le trajo rosas rojas a su hija y Amadeo Knodlseder… pertenecen, en cambio, al ciclo de obras satíricas y apocalípticas, producto de la influencia de la guerra sobre su alma mórbida.
